Eight Villages Submerge Under Sea Water in Thatta

Several villages near the Gharo area of district Thatta came under the sea water, following a sudden surge in the tides.

According to sources, moderate to heavy rainfall in the coastal areas induced the waves, inundating the villages located some 60 kilometres from the district.

Moreover, pressure was constantly mounting on the embankments along the coastline till the filling of this report.

The villagers perturbed by flooding told reporters that no government officials have arrived in the areas, leaving them on the mercy of the waves.

One of the affected villages, Haji Mir Jat is adversely affected where the villagers themselves are taking measures to move to safe areas.

The locals are mostly associated with fishing and now their source of livelihood stands badly affected.

As per an estimate, some 30 million acres of land, including a large area of agricultural land, has been eroded by sea in the coastal areas of Thatta, Sujawal, and Badin.

The abrupt changes in the weather conditions in the districts are likely to further aggravate the situation.

Last month too, the waves caused havoc in coastal areas of Thatta when sea water inundated around 10 villages of Bagar and Keti Bunder area.

According to residents of nearby areas, the rise in the sea level was noticeable for the past three days.

The waves broke the already splintered protective dykes near Bagar and Keti Bunder area, after which water entered the farmlands and villages located along the coastline.

Muhamad Ali Shola, Mir Jat, Pariyo Lashari, Sholani, and other villages were badly hit by the advancing seawater.

Pir Bux Maliyo, a local resident, told this correspondent at the time that the dykes raised along the coastal villages were weak and couldn't bear the pressure of the waves induced by gusty winds that blow across the low-lying region from January to May.
