The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday directed authorities to shift Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman and former prime minister Imran Khan to Adiala jail from Attock jail.

The judgment was given based on the requirement that trials of convicts booked in Islamabad take place in the appropriate jail, which was announced during a hearing over the prison privileges provided to the PTI chairman.

Khan is a prisoner awaiting prosecution in the Islamabad-registered cipher case, Chief Justice Aamer Farooq of the IHC noted during the PTI petition hearing.

He inquired as to why Attock jail, rather than Adiala jail, was being used to house a prisoner awaiting trial.

Khan was detained in the Attock jail in the Toshakhana case, which was suspended, according to the chief judge, who also ordered his relocation.

He asked Additional Attorney General Munawar Iqbal Dogar, "If tomorrow you transfer [him] to Rahim Yar Khan, would the trial be held there?"

During the hearing, Khan's lawyer, Advocate Sher Afzal Marwat, requested that his client be given the facility of an exercise machine.

Justice Farooq said it was mentioned that now the A and C classes have been abolished in the jail.

Khan’s lawyer, Barrister Salman Safdar, said his client has a right to the better class. "Now there are general and better classes in the jail," he added.

"It is confirmed that the PTI chairman is entitled to the better class, as he is the former prime minister and an educated person," the chief justice observed.

Justice Farooq remarked that Khan should be provided with the amenities to which he is entitled and that his rights shouldn't be infringed upon.
