Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice Chairman and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi was arrested by Rawalpindi police on Wednesday from Adiala jail in relation to a case involving violent demonstrations on May 9.

After his bail in the cipher case was granted last week, Qureshi was arrested under the maintenance of public order (3-MPO).

In a video circulated on social media, Qureshi can be seen resisting his arrest from the premises of Adiala Jail and calling journalists to record his statement.

Speaking to the journalists, Qureshi said that his detention resulted from a false accusation. He said, "I am being politically victimized despite my innocence."

“Injustice and oppression. This is mocking the order from the Supreme Court. Without any justification, I am being victimized politically," he continued.

Qureshi was connected to incidents including the May 9 riots, which started after PTI founder Imran Khan was taken into custody from the premises of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in a corruption case earlier this year.

Sources stated that Qureshi will be produced in an anti-terrorism court (ATC) after being detained in connection with a GHQ attack case.

Officials from the police stations in RA Bazar and Saddar shifted the PTI leader in an armored vehicle to a Rawalpindi police station.

A day earlier, Qureshi's arrest order was issued by Deputy Commissioner Rawalpindi Hasan Waqar Cheema due to his alleged involvement in the violent riots on May 9.

The Supreme Court granted his bail in the state secrets case last week, and the detention order was issued just before Special Court Judge Abual Hasnat Zulqarnain issued his release orders in the cipher case.
