To finally fulfil the promise made by Prime Minister Imran Khan in his first address after election as PM, the government is planning to set up a university in Islamabad, but not at the PM House. The new university will likely be established in the Sir Syed Memorial Building in G-5, Islamabad, according to a report in Dawn.

The report quoted sources as saying that officials from the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) mulled over the option to establish the university in Sir Syed Memorial Society (SSMS) Complex in G-5.

The HEC is meaning to established the proposed Pakistan University of Engineering and Emerging Technologies (PUEET). Following the meeting, the officials visited the building after which they termed it fit for academic activities.

The HEC is said to have written two to the CDA, seeking lease of the complex. It emerged in the meeting that the lease of the building was expired and that the CDA should give it to the HEC for the interim establishment of the university.

HEC documents show that the building is currently being used by the Department of Archeology and Museum, National History and Literary Division. Sir Syed Memorial Society is also located in it. Between 2003 and 2018, the building was being used by a private university.
