A former Khairpur teacher was on Thursday acquitted of raping his students, causing an online backlash.

The convict, Sarang Shar was acquitted by a sessions judge of the district who 'scrutinised' the evidence and police reports before reaching the said conclusion.

Shar – who offered private tuition –  was arrested in 2020 after videos and pictures of him molesting the children went viral on social media.

It had emerged at the time that the former teacher would sexually assault his students and film them at his house situated in the Thari Mirwah area.

The surprising acquittal has invited a strong online reaction, with many questioning the criminal justice system of the country.

A Twitter user lamented that the former teacher was allowed to walk free despite the evidence being as clear as daylight.

Activist Jibran Nasir asked the Sindh government if it was going to file an appeal against a rapist who could now roam free.

In another tweet, he pointed out that Shar was acquitted in three separate FIRs so he could walk free.

Other Twitter users termed the decision to release a pedophile a grave injustice to the victims and their families, saying a monster has been allowed to be among the public again.

Others raised questions about the educational system, where people like Shar were allowed to operate.

There have been no reports so far of the verdict being challenged in a higher court or an official taking notice of the development.

Last month, a nine-year old mentally challenged boy was found raped and murdered in Korangi, Karachi.

According to the police surgeon, the boy was strangled to death after being sexually assaulted. “There were multiple injuries all over the body and findings are suggestive of anal sexual abuse.”
