Former Test cricketer Atiq-uz-Zaman has been appointed as the head coach of the German cricket team, according to the Deutsche Cricket Board (DCB).
In a statement, the board said Atiq will coach the German team for the 2024 T20 World Cup qualifiers.
“We are thrilled to welcome Atiq-uz-Zaman to the men’s national team coaching staff," it said. "There will be a contest for the top two spots, winning you a spot in the T20 World Championship in 2024."
The board further stated that the experienced former cricketer's involvement in top cricket as a coach and player will be of benefit to the players and the coaching staff and will enable them to advance the current national and under-19 squads and the overall talent development in German cricket.
The DCB further said that the "participation would focus on the strategic planning, implementation, and management of development initiatives," as part of the 'elite high performance process'.

Atiq, who played for Pakistan in three ODIs and one Test as a batter and wicket-keeper, now works as a coach.
He has also held the positions of fielding head and wicket-keeping trainer for Lahore High-Performance Centre of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
At present, he is working to attain his Level 4 certificate while also serving as a batting coach for English men's teams. The versatile former cricketer took up the role with the English board on March 30, 2022.
The appointment of the Pakistani coach has brought praise for him from those at home and abroad, who termed it a great opportunity for him to train potential stars to enable them to showcase their talent.
Many cricket fans in the country say that the appointment is also an indication that Pakistan continues to create talent that is able to translate the same into the young generation, and bring the country a good name.
