Chairman of Pakistan’s Parliamentary Committee on Kashmir Rana Muhammad Qasim Noon and Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States Rizwan Saeed Sheikh held an interactive session with journalists at the Embassy of Pakistan in Washington, D.C., discussing the Jammu and Kashmir dispute and Pakistan’s position on its resolution.
Noon, who is visiting Washington following engagements connected with the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, briefed media representatives on recent developments surrounding Kashmir and discussed what he described as the way forward on the longstanding dispute.
He reiterated Pakistan’s stated policy of extending moral, diplomatic and political support to the Kashmiri people and argued that lasting peace and stability in South Asia remained linked to a peaceful and just settlement of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute.
The Kashmir Committee chairman said Pakistan continued to call for a resolution in accordance with the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions. Pakistan’s National Assembly identifies Noon as the current chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Kashmir, whose mandate includes advocating Pakistan’s position on the dispute and supporting the right to self-determination under UN resolutions.
Ambassador Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, meanwhile, said the Jammu and Kashmir dispute remained part of the United Nations and other international frameworks. He emphasized Pakistan’s view that a peaceful resolution was important not only for stability in South Asia but also for broader international peace and security.
The session provided journalists an opportunity to exchange views with the two officials on the diplomatic, political and international dimensions of the Kashmir dispute as Pakistan continues to raise the issue at international forums.
