Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and senior lawyer Hamid Khan on Saturday said that the decision to form an inquiry commission into the letter by judges of the Islamabad High Court with a retired judge leading such a commission would be a historic mistake and that lawyers would oppose such a move. Instead, he suggested that Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa should head such a commission.

He said this while appearing on a television talk show, [Naya Pakistan] on [Geo News].

Hamid suggested that the Supreme Court ought to take a suo moto notice of the serious allegations levelled by six judges of the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

He also rejected the government's decision to form an inquiry commission and demanded that the top court form a five-member bench.

Hamid Khan also refused to accept the statements issued by Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar, adding that anything that Tarar says is baseless and false.

He also refused to believe that there was consensus among a majority of judges to form an inquiry commission under a retired judge. But if that is so, then it would be unfortunate, and the lawyers' community would oppose this Supreme Court decision.

Hamid Khan explained that the IHC judges wrote the letter to the Supreme Judicial Council, which should offer guidance.

Meanwhile, Tarar questioned critics of the decision to form the commission, noting that the commission is being formed on the consensus communicated by the full court of the highest judicial body of the land.

Curiously, PTI's legal team had earlier demanded the resignation of Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa and Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Aamer Farooq in a press conference.
