The Pakistan Cotton Growers Association Chairman Chaudhry Waheed Arshad has asked the government to address the cotton crisis and has also demanded measures to fix the problems in the industry.
With regards to the cotton crop, Arshad stressed upon the need to limit cotton purchases by the textile sector. He explained that the ginning industry had stopped purchasing cotton as the farmers had stopped picking cotton.
Consequently, the market is facing massive disruptions as the entire supply chain and all stakeholders are affected. Cotton ginning mills have not received cotton and factories are now serving as warehouses of unsold cotton.
Arshad also mentioned that given the current industrial and environmental crises in the country, wheat cultivation will not be possible which is going to lead to a food shortage.
This is important because wheat cultivation is only possible when farmers are able to sell off cotton and start preparing lands for another round of cultivation for a different crop. By now, the cotton should have been sold and wheat cultivation ought to have taken place which it cannot now.
