Controversial social media influencers Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan Tate were released from a prison facility in Bucharest, Romania on Friday March 31, 2023. The divisive internet personality, who has been in a Romanian jail since the end of last year on suspicion of organized crime and human trafficking, has won an appeal to replace his detention with house arrest.
A self-described misogynist, Andrew Tate and his brother have been moved to house arrest while they will continue to be investigated for alleged human trafficking and rape, after a Romanian court overturned a prosecutors’ request to keep them in police custody until late April.
Andrew Tate, Tristan Tate and two Romanian female suspects have been in police detention since December 29. Prosecutors are investigating them for suspected human trafficking, rape and forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit women.
Accompanied by their Romanian lawyers, the brothers – who deny all charges brought against them – were released at approximately midnight local time on Friday from the police central arrest premises in Bucharest. The two female suspects were also released.
“We see the court decision as legal, thorough and correct,” Tate’s lawyer Eugen Vidineac told reporters on Friday.
He said the brothers were forbidden from contacting witnesses and leaving the house without approval from authorities. “We do not yet have the court’s motivation, we do not know whether there are other interdictions,” Vidineac said.
A small group of supporters were waiting for them outside the prison, chanting “Top G” – as Andrew Tate is known among his online followers.
Earlier this week, the same Bucharest court of appeals denied the Tate brothers’ request to be released on bail. In previous rulings that extended their stay in police custody, judges have said the Tate brothers posed a flight risk and that their release could jeopardise the investigation.
But the Tate brothers were released when the appeal against their detention succeeded, after they had stayed behind bars for more than three months. The Bucharest Court of Appeal ruled in favor of Tate, who will remain under house arrest until his investigation continues.
What next for Andrew Tate?
The controversial influencer shared in his future plan in his first ever message after getting free from jail, where he had been detained since the end of December 2022.
"I'm a little bit emotional, I've been in one room since last year so it's a little bit emotional. I wanna give respect to the judges who heard us today because they were very attentive and they listened to us," the former world champion kickboxer said.

"I have no resentment in my heart for the country of Romania or anybody else. I just believe in the truth. I believe in God and that the fire of truth will eventually burn the lies" he added. Tate went on to express his innocence, saying he believes the court will find him innocent of all accusations.
The social media influencer also shared what he plans on doing first now that he has been released from jail. "When I was in jail I did 7,417 pushups," Tate said. "I want to get to 10,000 before the end of the week."
