Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli's family received threats on social media after he extended support to fellow player Mohammed Shami who has been facing attacks online by extremists following India's defeat in the match against Pakistan.
Shami, who is India’s only Muslim player, received relentless abuse on social media after Pakistan's victory.
Some Indian supporters online abused Shami and told him to 'go to Pakistan' despite Kohil admitting that the Indian team was outplayed by Pakistan.
Indian captain Virat Kohli recently issued a statement in Shami's support and termed his haters 'spineless'.
“Here’s a good reason why we are playing on the field, and not a bunch of spineless people on social media that have no courage to actually speak to any individual in person,” Kohli had stated.
Following Kohli's remarks, bullies on social media targeted the batsman's family including his 10-month-old daughter, Vamike. The trolls went as far as to issue rape threats to the cricketer's infant daughter.
Persecuted for celebrating Pakistan's victory
Earlier, it was reported that many Kashmiri students in Indian colleges were beaten up during the cricket match between India and Pakistan when they celebrated Pakistan’s performance by chanting Azadi (freedom) slogans.
Pakistan managed to beat India by 10 wickets, a match that was watched by millions of cricket fans across the world.
Indian media reported that several students at the Bhai Gurdas Institute of Engineering and Technology in the Sangrur district of Indian Punjab were tortured in their hostel rooms by students from UP and Haryana.
Another such incident was reported at the Rayat Bahrat University in Kharar.
Videos of pro-Pakistan students being beaten up were shared by students from the Bhai Gurdas Institute of Engineering and Technology.
