Sir Lewis Hamilton will leave the Mercedes AMG Formula 1 team at the end of the 2024 season to join Scuderia Ferrari.
Hamilton is the sport's most successful driver, with 7 World Driver's Championships, 103 race victories, 104 pole positions and 197 podiums to his name.
Hamilton moved to Mercedes from McLaren in 2013, in a move that was widely criticized as a career misstep, owing to the Mercedes team's middling success.
Since 2014, Mercedes has gone on to win 8 Constructors' Championships on a trot, with Hamilton winning 82 races and 6 World Driver's Championships in his 11 years with the team.
Hamilton narrowly lost out on a record breaking eighth World Championship to Red Bull's Max Verstappen at the controversial 2021 season finale at Abu Dhabi. Verstappen overtook Hamilton on the last lap to win his first World Driver's Championship. Formula 1 Race Director Michael Masi was later removed from his position for the decision that allowed Verstappen an advantage over Hamilton, who had led the entirety of the race. Hamilton and Verstappen were level on points going into the last race of the 2021 season.
Mercedes have struggled in the 2022 and 2023 seasons, with Hamilton scoring no race wins in either season and only one pole position.
Many have suggested Mercedes' lagging performance as the reason for Hamilton's switch to Ferrari.
