The Supreme Court of Pakistan has fixed Thursday (Jan 5) as the day to begin the suo motu hearing into journalist Arshad Sharif's killing.
Arshad Sharif was killed on Oct 24 when the Kenyan police in Nairobi fired at him allegedly for not stopping at a checkpoint.
While many people, including journalists, are of the opinion that Sharif was ‘murdered’ in a deliberate attack, Kenyan police claimed he was shot in a case of ‘mistaken identity’.
On Dec 7, the top court directed the federal government to formulate a new, ‘independent’ Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.
CJP Bandial had also said that the JIT should include officials from the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), the Intelligence Bureau (IB), the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and the police.
He had also directed said that the investigation should begin with Khurram and Waqar, the two brothers whom Arshad Sharif was reportedly staying with, in Kenya.
