Military To Court Martial Officials Involved In Smuggling: Caretaker Interior Minister

The military has promised to take disciplinary and legal action against any of its officials who are found involved in the illegal practice of smuggling.

Caretaker Federal Interior Minister Sarfraz Bugti narrated this during a news conference in Islamabad on Monday.

Bugti was providing a progress report on the interim government's month-long efforts to curb smuggling as it struggles to tackle serious issues plaguing the economy.

He said the major items being smuggled were food (wheat, sugar), fertilisers (urea), currency and fuel.

Bugti said that a joint checkpost of Customs and other law enforcement bodies.

In the crackdowns against currency smugglers and those operating illegal money transfer services such as 'hawala' and 'hundi', some 168 FIRs were registered.

In anti-narcotic operations, some 242 FIRs were registered.

He said that indiscriminate action is being taken against those involved in these acts. He said that no leniency will be shown to anyone regardless of how powerful or connected they were.

The interim interior minister said that Army Chief General Asim Munir had confided that officials involved in smuggling are being investigated.

He said it would be incorrect to say security forces are not involved in smuggling, adding that the cases being investigated were not through the smuggler routes on the backs of camels but via main thoroughfares using trucks.

"I was attending the meeting in which the army chief clearly stated that not only would these officers face a court-martial, but they would be sent to jail as well," he recalled.

He said the military has their system of accountability,, which we saw in action after the May 9 incident.

On the rising spate of terrorist attacks, Bugti said that based on their measures, a noticeable decrease in attacks will be witnessed in the coming days.

Terrorists resort to more attacks when subject to a higher frequency and intensity of operations against them.

He said that by resorting to terror attacks and bombings, they aim to put the government on the back foot. But we will not back off, rather, we will step forward and fight them until not even a single terrorist is left.
