Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial on Thursday stated that they will defend the public and the Constitution and that they will not allow the armed forces to take unconstitutional steps.
He issued these remarks on Thursday as a six-member bench heard petitions against the trial of civilians in military courts.
During Thursday's hearing, Chief Justice Bandial stated that extreme incidents were witnessed on May 9. In Mianwali, he remarked, a hole was punched in a wall to access the military installation there.
"We must appreciate the armed forces for exhibiting restraint and not opening fire on civilians," he observed, adding that they would never want to see the military fire upon civilians.
CJP Bandial said he was hurt when he heard comments from senior lawyer Aitzaz Ahsan over military restraint.
The military is here to protect the nation, and they were correct in not firing upon civilians, he remarked, adding that the SC will not allow the military to adopt any illegal or unconstitutional steps.
Ahsan's counsel Latif Khosa urged the bench to decide the case within this week. To this, the court responded that they have even cut short their summer vacations to decide cases.
