Bishop of Lahore Rt Rev Nadeem Kamran has strongly condemned the recent hate remarks of Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Maulana Abdul Akbar Chitrali, saying the Christian community is in grief and anger over the lawmaker’s statement against their holy books.
In a press statement, Bishop Nadeem said that the hate speech by Maulana Abdul Chitrali has badly hurt the sentiments of the entire Christian community.
He also urged the government to initiate action against the Jamaat-e-Islami leader, who delivered a hate speech on the floor of the assembly and attempted to damage peace and harmony in the country.
Chitrali has triggered criticism and condemnation from the Christian community for referring to their holy books, the Torah and Psalms, as "canceled scriptures."
"The Gospel, the Torah, and the Psalms are canceled (scriptures). We believe in all of them and don’t reject them, but the holy Quran is permanent and will remain till the judgment day," Chitrali said on March 28.
Bishop Nadeem also expressed grave concern over the National Assembly (NA) speaker’s decision not to let Pakistan Peoples Party MNA Naveed Amir Jeeva condemn the hate speech of Maulana.
He added that it is the obligation of the NA speaker to ensure that the floor of the assembly may not be used to spread hate against other religions.
