Former Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) chief Bashir Memon claimed that the government was trying to ‘make an example’ out of him, sending a message to fellow government officials that if they do not follow orders, they would be at the receiving end of a witch-hunt whereby they would be ridiculed, jailed, and their pensions halted.
Memon appeared before an investigation team on Saturday, led by FIA Punjab Director Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Muhammad Rizwan. The team is inquiring into Memon's involvement with Omar Farooq Zahoor, who is suspected of financial crimes in Zurich and Oslo, human trafficking, and was also wanted by Interpol.
Speaking on Geo News' "Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath," the former FIA chief said "I have secured pre-arrest bail because I know what is going on and who is behind it," and claimed that the investigation team was "inept and dishonest."
"Do they want the Financial Action Task Force to intervene in this case? What were the cops doing at the airports when the man came and left Pakistan 32 times? At the time, the guy who summoned me was the immigration director. Wajid Zia was in charge of immigration. Ask them if I assisted the accused in any way," he asserted.
Memon denied the allegations against him, stating that he was not the FIA's Director General (DG) in 2015, when the warrant for Omar Zahoor was filed.
