The funeral prayers of two ISI officials martyred in Khanewal were offered on Wednesday, with DG ISI Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum present on the occasion.
The Multan region director of the spy agency's counterterror division, Naveed Sadiq Sial, and inspector Nasir Abbas, were known for having arrested members of the banned TTP, also known as the Pakistani Taliban, and other terrorists. Both officers were also reputed for their expertise in investigating and solving complex terror cases, including sophisticated gun-and-bomb attacks.
Naveed Sadiq Sial had received a presidential medal for gallantry for his role in numerous operations, including neutralizing the leader of a Daesh cell in Faisalabad, and the prevention of a suicide bombing attack in Gujranwala.
Director Naveed and inspector Nasir were walking back to their vehicles after having tea at a roadside hotel near Pirowal in Khanewal district on Tuesday when the incident took place.
As per available details, the assailant had reached Bismillah Hotel nearly thirty minutes before the arrival of the officers.
The officials reportedly offered lunch to the suspect. However, he refused and the three had tea. Before leaving, Naveed reportedly cleared the bill amounting to Rs. 380, after which all three left for the parking lot. The assailant’s bike was also placed in front of the victims’ vehicles.
As the officers were just about to embark their vehicles, the assailant opened fire and thereafter fled, leaving both dead on the spot. The as-yet unidentified murderer was wearing a shawl that concealed his weapon. He fled with the weapon in hand.
