Swedish cartoonist Lars Vilks, notorious for making blasphemous cartoons targeting Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), died in a car accident on Sunday. The police officers who had been deployed for his security were also killed in the incident.
In 2007, Vilks had insulted Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and his blasphemous depiction had sparked a backlash by the Muslim world.
Vilks, 75, was commuting along with two cops assigned for his protection when their vehicle collided with a speeding truck, as per the Swedish police. The Swedish authorities have said that the incident is being seen like any other road accident, ruling out the possibility of foul play.
The investigation into the accident has reportedly been assigned to a special section of the prosecutor's office as two policemen also lost their lives.
The accident took place near Markaryd when the vehicle Vilks was travelling in crashed into a truck. The truck driver was injured in the accident and was rushed to the hospital.
