The President of Pakistan Arif Alvi has written to Prime Minister Imran Khan and opposition leader Shehbaz Sharif to propose a caretaker prime minister as the country moves towards general elections. In the event that they fail to come to agreement on the caretaker PM, then they would have three days to put forward two nominees each to a committee that the speaker will set up. Under Article 224A(1) of the Constitution, this committee will consist of eight members who could be “from the outgoing National Assembly, or the Senate, or both, having equal representation from the Treasury and the Opposition, to be nominated by the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition respectively.”
In the interim, Imran Khan is to continue as Prime Minister.
