Days after an official US report warned that terrorist groups were reorganizing in the Pakistan-Afghanistan region, a delegation from the US will arrive in Islamabad on Sunday (today) for counterterrorism discussions.
The Pak-US counterterrorism talks will be held in Pakistan from March 6–7, according to a statement from the US State Department. "Acting Coordinator for Counterterrorism Christopher Landberg will lead an interagency team to Pakistan," the statement read.
According to the statement, "The United States and Pakistan will examine the common terrorist challenges facing our two countries and create policy-oriented measures for collaboration in crucial areas, such as border security and combating the financing of terrorists."
According to diplomatic sources, the US-Pakistan defence discussions that took place in Washington last month also included topics like counterterrorism, funding for terrorism, and intelligence sharing.
The United States anticipates that Pakistan would support its initiatives to stop terrorist organizations from re-establishing their presence in Afghanistan under the Taliban government.
Following recent terrorist strikes in Peshawar and Karachi, the US gave Pakistan it's full backing in the battle against extremist organizations like TTP and IS-K that have taken credit for the attacks.
TTP and IS-K were once again turning into a significant threat to Pakistan, according to an official report that was released earlier this week.
According to the report, the TTP was undertaking a terrorist campaign against the military and state in an effort to drive the Pakistani government out of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and impose Sharia.
