Civil Society Protests Suspicious Death Of 2 MES Employees In Gilgit
GILGIT: After having gone missing for 12 days, the bodies of two Military Engineering Services' (MES) employees have been found from the Gilgit river, near Gilgit city. Hailing from district Astore, both employees of MES - identified as Abdul Qadir and Shehbaz Ahmad - went missing on April 19, before Eid. One body was found on May 2nd, while the other was recovered May 4th, from the Gilgit River.

A local religious organization 'Deeni Mushawrati Council' staged a sit-in along with the heirs and the remains of the deceased in front of Chief Minister's Secretariat, Gilgit. Traffic in the secure 'red zone' was suspended and shifted to parallel roads from both sides, and heavy security contingents were deployed during the protest sit-in.

Officebearers of Deeni Mushawrati Council demanded a joint investigation team (JIT) be formed to probe the 'murder' of both employees. Former member GB Assembly Himayat Ullah Khan, former member GB Council Molana Attaullab Shahab, Molana Khalil Ahmad Qasmi, Molana Abdul Sami, Sultan Raees and others, while addressing the sit-in, said that it was a serious question mark on the security agencies working in GB. They said it was a high profile test case for GB Police, the security agencies and the government of GB.

Gilgit Baltistan (GB) is highly sensitive region which cannot afford law and order situations, the politicians said. They demanded the formation of a JIT to probe the matter and bring those responsible to the court of law. They said the protest will continue until the culprits are booked under the law and brought before court.
