The National Assembly has passed a resolution rejecting the three-judge verdict of the Supreme Court in the Punjab elections case.
The resolution – moved by MNA Khalid Magsi – urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to 'not obey the ruling'.
It noted that the demand from different quarters for the constitution of a full-court to hear the case was rejected by the bench.
“The minority verdict was imposed on the majority and the Parliament rejects the former,” MNA Magsi read.
On Tuesday, the federal cabinet rejected the apex court's decision annul ECP's decision to postpone the polls.
On the same day, PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif rejected the verdict, urging the masses to rise against it.
“Why is so much effort being made to bring one man to power again,” the three-time prime minister asked while talking to journalists, in London.
He added that the people must rise against the decision because “these people are destroying the country.”
In his statement, Nawaz also said that a reference should be filed with the Supreme Judicial Council against the three judges, adding that the decision is a charge-sheet against themselves. “The bench refused to accept a majority decision.”
He opined that the decision of the bench was a minority decision, against the majority of other judges.
In its verdict, the Supreme Court declared the ECP’s decision regarding the postponement of elections in Punjab as null and void.
A three-member bench, led by Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial and including Justices Ijaz Ul Ahsan and Munib Akhtar, announced the decision.
In its ruling, the Supreme Court deemed the election body’s decision to hold elections on October 8 “unconstitutional” and mandated that they take place on May 14 in Punjab.
The ruling also stated that the Punjab government shall provide the Election Commission with a security plan. It further stated that a report on the electoral personnel should be submitted to ECP by April 10 by the caretaker government and chief secretary of Punjab.
