Foreign minister of Pakistan Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said that his Pakistan People's Party (PPP) opposes early as well as a delay in general elections. He rejected former prime minister Imran Khan's demand for snap general elections, and rubbished rumors of a long-term caretaker government.
Last month, the foreign minister ruled out the possibility of early elections, saying that it was important for the assemblies to complete their term for the democracy's survival.
Addressing a press conference following a meeting of the PPP's Central Executive Committee (CEC) in Lahore on Thursday, party chairman Bilawal said the PPP would formulate a code of conduct for all political parties. He added that his party would consult with all the parties in the ruling PDM coalition as well as in the opposition parties.
Bilawal asserted that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan was fully aware that he could not form a government without unwavering support from the establishment.
“Imran Khan knows that he cannot come into power without the help of the establishment. In this stage of life, he should become a democratic man,” Bilawal quipped.
In an interview with international press, the foreign minister said that the PTI chairman's demand for early elections was a "political agenda".
He said that the parties in the PDM coalition were working together to solve the pressing issues facing Pakistan, clarifying that a dilapidated economy was passed on by the PTI government to the incumbent coalition government.
"The former government's failed foreign policy has isolated us from the entire world," Bilawal added. He said that the PDM government was looking for solutions to internal problems, as well as "consensus" at the international level.
Although the ruling PDM coalition has time and again rejected PTI's demands for an early election, Imran Khan continues to stress that snap polls were the only solution to the country's ongoing crises.
