Hundreds Of Dead Fish At Rawal Dam Put Residents Into Panic Mode
Hundreds of fish were seen floating near Rawal Dam, creating panic among the residents of the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, who mostly get their drinking water from the reservoir.

There have been no reports of a loss of a human life due to the poisoning, but a probe may ascertain the facts. The residents called for due steps to bring illegal fishing to an end.

Two suspects were earlier caught red-handed while poisoning the dam. The incident was also brought to the attention of the authorities by the staff, with the relevant legal action awaited.

Taking notice of the incident, the Standing Committee of National Assembly on Climate Change sought a report from authorities.

The committee strongly condemned the actions that harm the environment, people, and animals. It called upon public to adhere to the ethical and legal means of fishing, and protect natural resources.

Speaking on the occasion, Chairperson of the Committee, Nuzhat Pathan urged authorities to take stern action against the culprits and punish them according to the laws.

Meanwhile, Deputy Director Fisheries Hamid Khan told The Friday Times that the water of the reservoir is safe for drinking.

"It is safe for human consumption," he said, adding that the incident happened after a part of the fence guarding the reservoir was found broken.

Such an incident didn't happen for the first time, and has once again exposed the efficiency to overcome the situation as authorities pass the buck on the issue.

The incidents are linked with pollution of the lake and use of toxic chemicals to illegally net fish, with no effective practices put in place so far. Both the reasons are adequate to further worsen the environment, requiring elaborate and lasting measures.
