Several leaders of the banned Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) have been granted bail by an anti-terror court (ATC) in Lahore in multiple cases registered against them.
Those who were awarded bail include Maulana Farooqul Hassan, Ghulam Ghaus Baghdadi, Pir Zahirul Hassan, Maulana Sharifuddin, Engineer Hafeezullah Alvi, Maulana Abdul Razzaq, Mohammad Badar Munir, Qari Ashraf, Mohammad Akbar, Muzaffar Hussain, Mohammad Umar and Muzammil Hussain.
They have been asked to submit bail bonds of Rs100,000 each.
Their bail applications were heard in 20 cases which were clubbed together. Special Prosecutor Abdul Rauf Watoo requested the court not to grant bail at this stage. Terrorism cases were registered against the TLP leaders at various police stations in Lahore under sections pertaining to terrorism after the violent protests last month. At least five policemen were killed while several others received injuries in clashes with the rioters.
Earlier, senior Punjab police officers have been transferred over ‘failure to stop protests of the TLP’.
The decision was taken two days after around 60 police officers deployed on GT Road in Sadhoki, Punjab to stop protesters requested Punjab Police Inspector-General Rao Sardar to direct a probe and fix responsibility for the ‘flawed security plan’.
Prime Minister Imran Khan and Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar were also reportedly irked by the police over what they considered its failure to prevent the religious party workers from leaving the provincial capital.
Reportedly, additional IG Fayyaz Ahmed has reportedly been named as the new Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) of Lahore. The notification issued on Thursday said that 12 senior officers responsible for evolving the security plan and stopping the TLP rally were transferred for failing at their job.
