In a powerful gesture against ecological destruction, Muslim and Hindu locals in Thar jointly chased and apprehended three of the poachers who had killed eight rare deer in a wildlife sanctuary. The killed deer were given a proper ritualistic burial as a sign of respect.
Five poachers had killed eight rare deer in a wildlife sanctuary in the Chelhar settlement of Tharparkar district on Tuesday. A young Thari boy, Utam Singh Rajput, chased them in his jeep and forced them to surrender themselves to concerned villagers.
The poachers attempted to flee, but Uttam Singh and other villagers managed to intercept them by hitting their vehicle with Uttam's jeep. The hunters fired at the villagers pursuing them, but the villagers remained adamant and did not allow the poachers to escape.
The residents managed to capture three of the hunters, while two managed to escape. The three captured poachers were brought to the Mithi police department, who on the complaint of Saroop Singh registered an FIR against five suspects under the relevant sections of the Pakistan Penal Code.
The captured poachers included Abdul Salam Bari, Ali Ahmed Mangrio, Saleem, Mohammad Hassan and Abdul Ghani.
Residents of Mithi then held protests over the killing of the rare deer, and appealed to the Sindh government to announce harsher punishments for wildlife poaching. The protests were held at Kashmir Chowk Mithi, and the carcasses of the eight deer were presented at the protest.
Following this, the residents came together and dug graves to give the slain deer a proper burial.
