The second woman to be appointed to the Supreme Court (SC) since Pakistan's independence, Justice Mussarat Hilali, was sworn in as a judge on Friday.
At a ceremony held at the apex court, Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Attorney General for Pakistan Mansoor Usman Awan, and representatives of the legal community swore Justice Hilali in.
With her addition, the Supreme Court currently has 16 judges, with one open position.
Prior to her retirement, Justice Hilali, the first female chief justice of the Peshawar High Court, would preside as a judge of the Supreme Court for three years. She was also the first woman to hold the position of Chief Justice of a high court in the country.
In 2022, Justice Ayesha A Malik became the first woman to hold the position of Supreme Court judge.
Justice Hilali, who was born in Peshawar on August 8th, 1961, graduated from Khyber Law College of Peshawar University with a law degree. He enlisted as an advocate in the district courts in 1983, the high court in 1988, and the supreme court of Pakistan in 2006.
