Chairman PPP and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto on Friday asked CJ Umar Ata Bandial to step down, after PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif made a similar demand.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court declared the ECP’s decision regarding the postponement of elections in Punjab till October as null and void.
In its ruling, the top court deemed the decision to hold elections on October 8 “unconstitutional” and mandated that they take place on May 14.
"With Justice Minallah’s note, we now have four justices on record. It is clear the CJs opinion is the minority judgement," Bilawal said in a Twitter post.
"The CJP & SC must act immediately to undo this unconstitutional bench fixing. This is only way the dignity of the supreme court can be resorted."
The PPP chief went on to add that "the three-member decision is not worth the paper it is written on. If the CJP cannot get his court in order and remedy this mockery of justice then perhaps he should allow someone else to take the responsibility of CJP."
Core committee meeting
Earlier today, the party's core committee met in Islamabad and termed the crisis a result of the insistence that the 'minority verdict' should take precedence over the majority decision, referring to the SC election verdict.
The meeting was attended by Bilawal, co-chairman PPP Asif Ali Zardari and other top leaders of the party.
"This position is untenable legally, morally and politically and needs to be reviewed," spokesperson Farhatullah Babar quoted the participants as saying.
The meeting asked the apex court to expeditiously resolve conflicting verdicts.
"The party believes that in the interest of fair and free elections general elections to all assemblies be held on the same day on a date provided for the in the Constitution. It reiterated that it will not countenance any delay in the holding of elections beyond the mandate date in the Constitution," Babar concluded.
