Pakistani Olympian javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem has become the first South Asian to cross 90 metres and the first Pakistani to win an athletics gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
The record-breaking javelin throw was made on Sunday night, and the 25-year-old athlete from Khanewal, Pakistan broke his own record, while also winning a gold medal in the process.

During the first round of the javelin throw final, Nadeem made a record breaking 86.81 metre throw, and then broke his own record by achieving an 88m throw on his second attempt. This was followed by a fourth attempt of 85.09m.
Ultimately, on his fifth attempt he made a record-breaking 90.18m throw, which made him the first South Asian to do so, and earned him the gold medal for the sport, making him the first Pakistani to do so.

Nadeem had competed in the Tokyo Olympics as well, and had sustained an elbow and soft tissue injury in his knee since before the Tokyo Olympics, and was competing at the Commonwealth Games without his personal coach.
Despite his injuries, he made and broke several records and won a gold medal for his country. This was the second gold-medal for Pakistan at the Commonwealth Games; the first one went to heavyweight lifter Nooh Dastagir Butt for lifting a record total of 405 kg in the +109 kg category of the Commonwealth Games heavy-lifting event.
