Former information minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhry has admitted that the 2019 drugs possession case against now-Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah made during the PTI government was a mistake.
Rana Sanaullah was arrested on July 1, 2019 by the Anti-Narcotics Force team while he was travelling from Faisalabad to Lahore near the Ravi Toll Plaza on the motorway. He was accused of carrying 15kg of heroin in his vehicle.
He was twice denied bail by the trial court before being released by the Lahore High Court (LHC) on December 24, 2019.
Speaking during a talk show on a private TV channel today, Fawad said that he had resisted the registration of the case against Sanaullah in a federal cabinet meeting.
Earlier during a federal cabinet meeting in December, 2019, Fawad had said that the PTI government has faced embarrassment due to the "mishandling" of the case against Sanaullah by the ANF.
Moreover, former human rights minister Dr Shireen Mazari had asked why there was no video footage of ANF recovering drugs from Sanaullah while former housing minister Tariq Bashir Cheema had wondered why the negligence was showed in such a high profile case involving a former Punjab law minister.
