Reacting to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairperson Imran Khan's recent remarks against the chief election commissioner (CEC), the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has termed his accusations 'baseless'.
The PTI chief and former prime minister had said at a political rally in Sheikhupura that the CEC was 'biased' towards Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
Following the allegations, the ECP responded by defending their CEC and said, "By issuing fatwas of treason, an institution cannot be declared a traitor.”
The electoral watchdog said that it would continue to make decisions that fell within the Constitution and the ambit of the law without succumbing to any pressure or blackmailing.
Imran Khan had previously also leveled allegations against the CEC during a PTI’s farmers' convention in Islamabad in June. He had said, "Both of the leaders want to rig elections with the help of the election commission," referring to Hamza and PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz, who he alleged were in cahoots with the CEC.
However the ECP rejected his claims and assured the public of their commitment to holding fair and transparent elections.
Recently, PTI Secretary General Asad Umar on July 5 alleged that the provincial government was trying to rig the upcoming by-polls on July 17. He warned the ECP to refrain from partnering with the PML-N to engage in manipulation of the elections.
