ATC Rejects Prosecution's Plea Seeking PTI President Parvez Elahi's Physical Remand

In the Federal Judicial Complex (FJC) attack case, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Islamabad on Friday rejected the prosecution's plea seeking a 10-day physical remand of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) President Parvez Elahi.

The PTI leader was sent into custody for 14 days at Adiala prison by ATC Judge Abual Hasnat Zulqarnain.

Even though the Lahore High Court (LHC) had specifically forbidden the authorities from detaining the PTI president earlier that day, the PTI president was taken into jail hours after being released from NAB detention on September 1.

The September 1 order was a reiteration of similar orders issued by the high court on July 13, 2023. Elahi has been arrested and detained repeatedly since the May 9 riots.

According to the police, the PTI president is suspected of supplying trucks and batons for rioters who were sent to Islamabad to vandalize the judicial complex. The physical remand was requested to interrogate him about unidentified offenders and recover vehicles.

Elahi was produced before the court today following the completion of his two-day physical remand.

Elahi thanked the judge for calling him to the rostrum and said, "There is no jail left in Punjab where I have not been incarcerated."

Elahi said he had a device put in his heart since he was a cardiac sufferer.

"Punjab Chief Minister [Mohsin Naqvi] is my relative, but he is my bitter opponent," he added.

To which the judge responded, "Beware of the evil of the one you have been generous to."

Elahi's lawyer also filed a plea to have his family visit him in prison and receive home-cooked meals.

On Elahi's plea for bail, the judge also sent notices to the respondents for September 11.
