Five unidentified individuals vandalised a Hindu temple in Karachi's Korangi area, and broke an idol during the attack.
The incident took place on Wednesday night, according to the registered FIR. A news report from Dawn said that five unidentified men on motorbikes stopped by the temple late last night and inquired about the whereabouts of the temple's pundit (caretaker).
The complainant Sanjeev Kumar said that when the miscreants showed up, there were only two workers inside the temple, who were busy painting the walls. "When they [the workers] told the men that the pundit wasn't available, the suspects started pelting stones at an idol," he said.
"They also threatened the workers and then fled from the crime scene," he further added.
Korangi Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Faisal Bashir Memon said the temple had been temporarily moved to the hall of a house in Korangi, and that renovation work was underway.
Cases have been registered against the vandals under sections 295 (injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class), 427 (Mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees), 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code.
SSP Memon also said that CCTV footage from the area is being utilized to book the suspects as soon as possible.
Karachi Administrator Murtaza Wahab said that the case been taken notice of, and that the vandals would be arrested. He also said that the damage caused to the temple would also be repaired.
