The death toll of Pakistani flood affectees has reached 1391 by the afternoon of September 8 per the latest situation report of National Disaster Management Authority. The number of children who lost their lives is now 496, women 279, and men 616. In 72 hours, since September 5, 66 people have died in the country, of which 55 were from Sindh. Since August 16, not even a single day has gone by without a fatality in Sindh, per NDMA's reports.

 

In the past three days, deaths of 25 children were recorded in Sindh, of three children in Balochistan, one in KP and two in Punjab. The number of children who have passed away in Sindh since June 14 is 251, in KP 110, in Balochistan 79, in Punjab 50, and 6 in GB.

 

12722 people have injuries, of which 3983 are children, 3400 women and 5339 men. 

 

Casualties occurred in Neelum, Kotli, Panjgur, DI Khan, Swat, Sialkot, Kashmore, Larkana, Sanghar, Jamshoro, Naushero Feroze, Badin, Tando Muhammad Khan District, Shaheed BenazirAbad and Ghotki. Causes of deaths include drowning, roof-collapse, snake bites and electrocution. It must be noted that NDMA's updates do not include segregated data on causes and location of all injuries and deaths. 

 

In its recent situation report, the World Health Organization states that diseases already prevalent could exacerbate e.g. acute diarrhoea, malaria, dengue, typhoid, leishmaniasis, HIV, Covid-19 and measles. The UN agency's early disease surveillance indicates "tens of thousands" are diagnosed with diarrhea, malaria, typhoid and acute respiratory infections (ARI), skin and eye infections.

 

Access to healthcare is further delayed due to damage to healthcare facilities. As per the WHO more than 10% health facilities are affected nationwide. Of the 1460 damaged facilities, 432 are destroyed and 1028 partially damaged, says the WHO.


 

Damage to infrastructure and properties:

 

Of the 33 million affected population nationwide, 663,869 are provided shelter by the government in collective camp sites. By September 8, damage to 1.7 million houses was recorded across calamity hit areas. Of the 1739166 damaged houses, 565878 are destroyed and 1173288 are partially damaged. In Sindh, 1.5 million houses -1525482- are damaged, of which 488405 are fully damaged. In KP, 88489 houses are damaged, of which 35585 are destroyed. In Balochistan, the number of damaged houses is 64385, of which 18410 are fully damaged. 59078 houses are damaged, of which 22601 are destroyed. In GB, 575 of the 1211 damaged houses are fully destroyed. Of the 521 damaged houses in AJK, 302 are destroyed. 

 

The death toll for livestock has reached 754708 now. 

 

In Punjab, further damage to 766 km of roads was recorded, and in Sindh to 187.7 km. As of September 8, 6688.7 kilometers of roads were damaged across the country.
