Justice Qazi Faez Isa – a senior Supreme Court judge – on Monday addressed the National Assembly on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Constitution.
At the advent of his speech, the learned judge made it clear that he was not in the Parliament to make a political speech.
Addressing the National Constitution Convention, Justice Isa said that he and the top court stood behind the Constitution.
He further said that he was told that there won't be any political remarks today, but that wasn't the case.
"This book is our identity, it is Pakistan’s identity," Justice Isa declared on the floor of the House, saying that while politicians look at different matters from their perspective, he looks at those matters from a perspective of the law.
He termed it necessary for the parliament and bureaucracy to focus on serving the people. "Our job is to make decisions as per the law and the Constitution and your job is to make laws that are beneficial for the people, while the task for the executive is to implement those laws and policies."
Justice Isa called upon the participants to embrace the Constitution, saying "the most important thing the Constitution talks about is people’s basic rights."
He highlighted that Pakistan's Constitution talks about certain rights that are not talked about in several countries.
In his concluding remarks, the learned judge thanked parliamentarians and said his "institution safeguards Constitution".
Justice Isa said that everyone [holding a public office] took an oath to defend the Constitution, adding he should be questioned if he doesn't.
The development comes amid intense judicial and political crises in the country. It intensified as the apex court set May 14 as the date for elections in Punjab, after annulling the ECP's decision in this regard.
