Over 200 people have been killed while thousands have been displaced in Afghanistan's northern Baghlan province as flash floods caused by heavy rains, the United Nations said on Saturday.

UN's International Organisation for Migration (IOM) said that some 1,500 homes were damaged or destroyed in the Jadid district of Baghlan. At least 100 people had been killed there.

Afghan Taliban's spokesperson, Zabihullah Mujahid, said that "hundreds" of citizens had succumbed in the floods but did not provide any clarity on the number of dead and injured. Officially, the Taliban government has put the toll at 63.

The floods have struck multiple provinces of Afghanistan, with officials of the Takhar province stating that at least.

Reports of damages came from the northeastern Badakshan province, central Ghor province and the western Herat province.
