Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Nominated Vice-Chair For COP27
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has been named the vice-president and a co-chair for the 27th session of the United Nations Climate Change Conference —more commonly known as COP27.

The announcement was made on Monday after Egyptian President and COP27 Chairperson Abdul Fattah Al-Sisi invited PM Shehbaz Sharif to co-chair the COP27 conference along with the Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. The conference is to be held in Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt, from November 6 to 18.

Prime Minister Shehbaz was invited to co-chair the conference after his vocal advocacy on the issue of climate change ever since Pakistan was hit by the worst case of flooding in its recent history this year. He stressed the need for an urgent climate action plan, as he warned that the climate change-induced disaster that Pakistan had faced would be experienced by other countries as well if preventive steps were not taken.

For this reason, out of 193 members of the UN, Pakistan was honored with the invitation to co-chair the conference. Addressing the nomination on Twitter, Shehbaz wrote that he was 'humbled by the invitation'.
