The Taliban have executed Rohullah Azizi, the brother of former Afghan vice president Amrullah Saleh.
News of the killing of Saleh’s comes days after the Taliban took control of Panjshir, the last stronghold of resistance against the new regime. Saleh was one of the leaders of anti-Taliban opposition forces in the Panjshir valley.
Ebadullah Saleh, a nephew of Amrullah Saleh, confirmed the death of Rohullah Azizi. “They executed my uncle,” he told newsmen. “They killed him yesterday and would not let us bury him. They kept saying his body should rot."
Alemarah, the Urdu language account of the Taliban information service, also confirmed that Rohullah Saleh had been killed during fighting in Panjshir.
Meanwhile the whereabouts of Amrullah Saleh are unknown.
The National Resistance Front of Afghanistan, which groups opposition forces loyal to local leader Ahmad Massoud, has pledged to continue opposing the Taliban even after the fall of Panjshir’s provincial capital Bazarak.
