Active discussions are underway, and a plan is being formulated to postpone the general elections in the country for two years on the basis of the surge in terrorism and poor economic conditions, claimed journalist Kamran Yousaf.
In a recent vlog on his YouTube channel, he said that the government is fully committed to delaying the polls in Punjab specifically because the party that secures victory in Punjab ultimately grabs seats in the National Assembly. So, the government wants elections in the National Assembly and provincial assemblies simultaneously, he added.
He mentioned that the tenure of all assemblies will end in August and elections will definitely have to be held in October, but the government is pursuing a plan to delay the polls for two years.
He said that Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah’s recent statement is a clear signal in this regard, as the minister had stated that if Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan will not mend his ways, then elections will not be held even in October.
He said that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has submitted a one-paper report to the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) regarding the elections in Punjab that were directed to be held on May 14. The ECP stated in its report that Rs 21 billion are required for conducting polls, but the government has not released that amount so far. The report further stated that the ECP needs 3,00,000 staff members for the elections, but the government says it can provide just 75,000.
He said that the federal government is not willing to comply with the verdict of the apex court as it believes that the Supreme Court's 4-3 decision was authentic and legal.
He added that the apex court's decision applies to all, and a failure to do so can result in contempt of court, which could have serious consequences for the prime minister. He supported his argument with the recent example of the disqualification of Azad Jammu and Kashmir Prime Minister Sardar Tanveer Ilyas for contempt of court.
He claimed that the government has made up its mind not to conduct elections on May 14. He said that they have a strategy as well to cope with the situation in the event that contempt proceedings are brought against them. He said that the contempt proceeding is also a long process, specifically if it involves the prime minister, as first the show-cause notice is served and later the trial is held, which will definitely take time and would serve the aim of the incumbent government, which wants to delay elections at all costs.
He said that after the 18th Amendment to the Constitution, elections are conducted under the supervision of the caretaker setup to ensure fairness and transparency.
The journalist said that the country is facing a severe economic crisis and inflation, due to which there are fewer chances that the incumbent government will attain victory in the upcoming elections.
He said that there is also no chance that the country’s economic crisis will be resolved if Imran Khan comes into power. He added that if Imran Khan loses the elections, he will also not accept the results and will not let the government work.
