The Pakistan Army on Monday took former spy chief Lt Gen (retired) Faiz Hameed into military custody and initiated court martial proceedings against him in the Top City housing scheme case.
The military said that apart from the Top City case, multiple instances of violation of the Pakistan Army Act post-retirement had also been established.
According to a brief statement issued by the military's media wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), on Monday, the military had undertaken a detailed court of inquiry against Lt Gen (retd) Hameed in compliance with orders from the Supreme Court.
"Complying with the orders of Supreme Court of Pakistan, a detailed court of inquiry, was undertaken by Pakistan Army, to ascertain correctness of complaints in Top City Case made against Lt Gen (Retd) Faiz Hameed," read the statement issued by the military on Monday.
Consequently, the military said appropriate disciplinary action was initiated against Lt Gen Faiz (retd) Hameed under the Pakistan Army Act.
"In addition, multiple instances of violation of Pakistan Army Act post-retirement have also been established."
The military said it has initiated a process of field general court martial against him while he has been taken into military custody.
It is pertinent to note that Lt Gen (Retd) Hameed served as the head of Pakistan's powerful spy service, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and oversaw a period when the US exited Afghanistan and the Afghan Taliban took over. He then served as the Corps Commander of Peshawar and later of Bahawalpur before taking early retirement in November 2022 after General Syed Asim Munir was appointed as the army chief.
Top City case
Lt Gen (retd) Hameed had been accused of abducting Moeez Ahmed Khan, the head of a housing society in Islamabad called 'Top City', along with five others and kept them hostage to hand over segments of the housing society.
Moeez had filed a petition with the top court's HRC, seeking action against the former ISI chief for his alleged role in attempting to grab land and steal valuables from him.
"On May 12, 2017, my house and office were raided on the orders of General (Rtd) Faiz Hameed. During the raid, valuables and records of our private housing society were stolen," Moeez claimed.
He added that the purpose of the illegal proceedings against him was to usurp control of Top City-1, one of the projects under Top City.
"After the raid, I, along with five other colleagues, were kept in confinement," Moeez stated, urging the federal government to take action against Gen (Rtd) Faiz Hameed, his brother Najaf and others.
Moeez had urged the top court to direct the Defence Ministry to initiate action against the retired officer. However, the court dismissed the petition after the Attorney General argued that the complainant could approach the Defence Ministry and other relevant forums to seek remedy.
It is believed that the court of inquiry against Lt Gen Hameed was established earlier this year and that it unearthed certain activities which it deemed violated provisions of the Army Act.
