Minority Rights Activists Call For Measures To Prevent Misuse Of Blasphemy Laws

Minority Rights Activists organized a walk on International Human Rights Day, urging the authorities to adopt concrete measures to prevent the misuse of blasphemy laws.

The demonstrations brought attention to the distressing incident that occurred on August 16th, 2023, in Jaranwala, when miscreants vandalized several churches and numerous Christian homes, allegedly over accusations of desecration of the Holy Quran.

While addressing the participants of the demonstration, the activists denounced the misuse of blasphemy laws, prevalent impunity, discriminatory practices, incitement of violence based on religion, coerced faith conversions, and forced child marriages.

Minority Alliance Pakistan (MAP) Chairman Akmal Bhatti, during his speech, highlighted the Jaranwala incident, saying the passive law enforcement response reflected a dire lack of justice, exacerbating victims' distress.

Akmal Bhatti called upon authorities to uphold constitutional equality in the upcoming 2024 elections. He advocated for increased representation of religious minority members in both national and provincial assemblies.

Voice for Justice Chairperson Joseph Jansen highlighted a rise in the number of cases of blasphemy based on false accusations and forced conversions of minor girls.

Jansen specifically highlighted Anwar Kenneth's case—a Christian sentenced to death under blasphemy charges for over two decades. Kenneth's appeal seeks justice and immediate acquittal, he added.

Shamaun Alfred urged immediate legislative action from the government to ensure equal rights and protection for minorities. He advocated for protective laws against forced faith conversions and the protection of communal properties.
