Following the movement's assaults on ships in the Red Sea, which resulted in a major regional escalation of the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza, the US and UK initiated air and naval strikes against Houthi military targets in Yemen.
While witnesses in Yemen confirmed explosions around the country to Reuters, President Joe Biden issued a warning late on Thursday, stating that he would not back down from taking additional action if necessary.
"These targeted strikes are a clear message that the United States and our partners will not tolerate attacks on our personnel or allow hostile actors to imperil freedom of navigation," stated Biden.
According to a statement from the British Ministry of Defence, "early indications are that the Houthis' ability to threaten merchant shipping has taken a blow."
The Houthis, who receive support from Iran, claim that their attacks on Red Sea commercial lanes are an act of solidarity with the Palestinian people and Hamas, the organization in charge of Gaza.
Ammar Hijazi, the Palestinian ambassador and assistant minister for multilateral affairs, praised South Africa for taking the issue to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and accusing Israel of committing acts of genocide against the Palestinian people.
Hijazi addressed a press conference following a judicial lawsuit against Israel's war in Gaza that South Africa brought before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
“The discussions today in the court case that South Africa has presented showed the court and the world the crimes that are being committed against the Palestinian people, which lead to committing genocide, but also showed in the more general historical context of the Palestinian issue and the crimes committed against the Palestinian people starting from the Nakba, the occupation, looting of its lands, apartheid, and all violations that Israel has committed throughout 75 years,” reported Reuters.
