In what appears to be an effort to ease strain in ties, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman held a meeting in Islamabad and agreed to devise a joint strategy against the government.
The meeting is also being viewed from the lens of the PPP re-joining the PDM. The PPP resigned from the PDM in April this year after it found itself disagreeing with other major parties in the PDM over the strategy to dislodge the government.
However, recently the PPP has been trying to bridge the differences with parties in the PDM, particularly Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N). Khursheed Shah, the veteran PPP leader, who was recently released from jail, is said to have played a major role in breaking the ice. He held meetings with PDM chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif in order to bring the opposition parties on the same page.
Various issues of political importance came under discussion during the meeting between the PPP chairman and Fazlur Rehman. Both leaders expressed concern over the rising inflation in the country and the detrimental impact that it had on the common man. Bilawal, once again, stressed the need to adopt a parliamentary approach to confront the government.
Referring to the ruling party’s recent defeat in Parliament, he said that the opposition could thwart the government's Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) law too if it adopted a joint strategy.
