Pakistan Ulema Council chairman Allama Tahir Mahmood Ashrafi has said that forced marriage and conversion were impermissible in Islam.
He expressed these views while addressing the National Dialogue organised by the Center for Research and Dialogue in Islamabad. Ashrafi said Islam and the Constitution of Pakistan give equal rights to all citizens. He said that no one will be allowed to foment religious hatred.
He said a neighbouring country aspired to stoke communal fires in Pakistan. When this failed, he said, efforts were being made to alienate the people from the armed forces. He said India had become living hell for minorities. This, he said, was due to the treatment being meted out to Muslims and Christians in the country.
Shia Ulama Council of Pakistan vice president Allama Arif Hussain Wahidi, Allama Iqbal Open University Seerat Chair Professor Sahibzada Sajid Rehman, Peace and Development Foundation director Rumana Bashir and advocate Rohit Kumar were also present on the occasion.
