The Election Commission of Pakistan on Tuesday summoned Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) Imran Khan and top party leaders Asad Umar and Fawad Chaudhry in an ongoing contempt case.
The Supreme Court of Pakistan had earlier served notices to these PTI leaders on a plea by ECP seeking consolidation of the challenges in different courts to its contempt notice. The electoral authority was later allowed to proceed with the contempt hearing as requested.
During the hearing today (December 13), ECP's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa member said that the intent of the electoral authority should not be doubted.
Subsequently, the Commission adjourned the proceedings until January 3, and sought Imran Khan, Asad Umar and Fawad Chaudhry at the next hearing.
The notices were issued in August this year for accusations against the electoral body and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikander Sultan Raja.
According to ECP, it had issued notices after reviewing speeches of the PTI leaders which were provided by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA).
