Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday reiterated his call for the formation of a “charter of economy”, saying a “conception of freedom” without economic independence is not possible.
In his televised address to the nation, the prime minister said that Pakistan needs to be headed in the right direction, adding that political leaders should not sacrifice national interest at the altar of personal interests.
Talking about the steps taken by his government for strengthening the country’s economy, he said that the government had banned imports of luxury items which resulted in the local currency's recovery against the US dollar.
He announced that the government will start solar projects and reduce import of oil and gas to provide cheap electricity to the nation.
The prime minister went on to say that his government has worked hard to steer the country out of the current economic crisis in a short time, adding that it is committed to take the country on the path of economic independence
He also congratulated Pakistanis on the 75th anniversary of independence and paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for the country’s establishment.
