The prospects of talks between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz remain slim because the ruling regime won't quash cases against ex-premier Imran Khan or guarantee that he won't be sent behind bars.
Well placed sources say that the dialogue couldn't be resumed because of an aggressive approach of the former ruling party towards their demands.
While the Imran-led party wants the snap polls announced, the 13-member alliance has been avoiding to do so 'on gunpoint'.
Talking exclusively to Naya Daur, a federal minister said allowing the talks at the moment will set a wrong precedence.
"Letting mobs decide a future course of action in such decisions will be detrimental for political stability," the minister remarked.
"What's worse is that the former ruling party wants us to guarantee that there will be no progress in the cases against Imran Khan before the general elections."
The minister went on to add that handing such a guarantee at the time will harm the ruling party's cause because our voters are unhappy with the treatment meted out to Nawaz Sharif. Also, the cases are in the courts, he said, hinting at their logical conclusion.
When contacted, a former federal minister representing the PTI termed snap polls their sole demand. He denied any demand being made for averting Imran's jail term, but said that the situation won't be 'under anyone's control' if the party chief was apprehended.
