Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah has announced that the government has started preparations to file cases under Article 6 against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders in light of the Supreme Court's detailed verdict on former National Assembly deputy speaker Qasim Khan Suri's April 3 ruling.
In its verdict issued on Wednesday, the apex court said that Suri’s April 3 ruling, which had dismissed then opposition’s no-confidence motion against former prime minister Imran Khan, failed to qualify for protection of the internal proceedings of parliament under Article 69(1) as it was “not the outcome of a vote in the assembly instead, it was a unilateral decision”.
Addressing a presser today, Sanaullah said: “We have started work to file a reference under Article 6. Only the federal government has the authority to file cases under Articles 5 and 6.”
He said that the apex court has given a “historic” verdict on the former NA deputy speaker’s ruling.
“This decision has accepted the rule of law and the rule of people,” he said.
“Imran Khan violated the Constitution for his benefit [...] in line with the order, the president, the then prime minister, and the then NA deputy speaker violated the Constitution.”
The minister added that he would also seek the federal cabinet’s permission to arrest the PTI chairman.
