Defense Minister Rebuffs Reports Of COAS Tenure Extention

Defense Minister Khawaja Asif called speculations about the likely extension of Chief of Army Staff Syed Asim Munir "premature," emphasizing the present government's strong ties with the army.

While giving an interview to a private news channel, Khawaja Asif emphasized the importance of the Strategic Implementation Framework Committee (SIFC) in establishing the nation's future trajectory. He also emphasized the importance of the next six months.

While responding to a question, he said Army Chief Syed Asim Munir still has two years to serve, adding that reports of his extension are premature.

Speaking of political events, Asif commented on former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's ambitions, highlighting his concentration on Punjab politics.

He stressed Nawaz Sharif's decision-making position inside the party and his ongoing influence despite his departure from formal office.

Reflecting on the establishment of the federal cabinet, Asif recognized Nawaz Sharif's crucial role in the selection process.

He ascribed his ministerial post to Sharif's support, proving the former premier's continued influence in government.

Asif shared insights into the recent conversations between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, which were productive.

According to Asif, Gandapur stated that there should be appropriate discussion on the floor of assembly, regardless of how we speak during rallies.

Asif praised Gandapur's attention to inter-provincial cooperation and security concerns in KP, and he announced plans for a meeting of the National Security Committee to discuss regional law and order issues.

Asif further stated that three candidates would be recommended to the federation for the job of Chief Secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Addressing Gandapur's concerns, Asif acknowledged the misunderstanding of previous acts and encouraged appropriate conversation both within and beyond the assembly. He also warned against the spread of power centers inside political parties, emphasizing the importance of unity and strategic alignment.

He also announced preparations to hold a National Security Committee meeting to examine law and order issues in KP, highlighting the government's proactive attitude toward regional security issues.
